Michigan Automotive Inspection Services offers industry-leading automotive pre-purchase inspection and appraisal services throughout Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and beyond. MEET THE OWNER
John Hansen is the owner of MAIS. John has been an automobile and motorcycle enthusiast for over 30 years and has personally inspected and appraised well over a thousand classic cars for clients all over the world. John's clients rely on his experience and expertise to confidently acquire a classic vehicle, sight unseen, from states or continents away. He has been formally trained in a variety of different aspects of classic vehicle maintenance and repair, including engine building, auto body, and paintwork.

John has prior work experience as an automobile salesperson and dealership inventory specialist. He has also worked as a business consultant for a local automobile repair facility.
​
John has owned a number of various vintage automobiles and motorcycles over the years and has completed and been a part of numerous automobile and motorcycle restorations. His background in restoration includes American and British vehicles and multiple award-winning antique Japanese motorcycles.

John has a passion for all types of automobiles and automotive history, with particular interest in American Classics of the 1930's-70's, British and Italian vehicles of the 1950's-1980's, American Muscle cars, and modern-day Classics from Europe and Japan, from the 1990's.

John has worked countless automotive events and shows over the years, including among others; The Mad Dogs and Englishmen British Car Show, The Red Barns Spectacular, and the Concours d'Elegance of America at St. John's. He has been active in local amateur motorcycle and automobile racing and auto-crossing at area racetracks throughout Michigan. He has many years of experience as a car show judge, including serving as current chief judge for the Red Barns Spectacular, and Porsche class judge at DeutscheMarques. He is a member of the Education Committee for the Gilmore Car Museum, and is a board member at large for the Kalamazoo Antique Auto Restorers Club. He belongs to a wide variety of car and motorcycle clubs including the Mad Dogs & Englishmen British Car Club, KAARC, the Classic Car Club of America, NCRS, SAAC, and the VJMC.
Most recently, John was hired as a technical consultant and creative advisor for a promotional film produced by a local media firm for the Gilmore. In January of 2024 he began serving as the Executive Director of the Classic Car Club of America Museum.

With previous courtroom and trial experience, John is a qualified expert witness, defending appraisals in litigation involving classic cars, successfully helping to secure judgments for his clients.

John loves to write about his adventures on two and four wheels, check out his work here. His writings have been published in the book 'Classic Car Adventures' by British author Richard McCann, and his articles about the classic car industry have also been featured on MSN, Yahoo, and Motorious. John is also occasionally featured as a guest on The Richard Piet Show, and was a guest lecturer speaking on the collector car industry in the 2021 Winter Speaker Series at the Gilmore Car Museum.

On the seldom occasion he's not arms deep in an old car, John can most commonly be found league racing 1/32 scale slot cars, ripping around area race tracks in his MX5, playing one of a number of old guitars hanging on the walls of his home, and most recently, club racing Hobie-Cat sailboats.
